Only few months into the war, 20. December 1939, silver grade of this award was instituted. On 1. June 1940, second, bronze class of this award was instituted. The reason for two grades is to recognize the effort of foot infantry – Silver, and motorised infantry – Bronze grade.
Order to institute this decoration came from Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch.
