Panzer Gefreiter Georg Greulich 5th Panzer Division

Gefreiter Georg Greulich was with the 8th Kompanie / Panzer Regiment 31 / 5th Panzer Division. He was the driver of a Panzer IV and was only 17 and 1/2 years old when he joined this unit.

He was the youngest of the 2200 soldiers in Regiment 31. His war service started in October 1943 and he went right through until May 8th, 1945. He was in 12 tank battles and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Panzer Assault badge in silver.

The Panzer Assault Badge in Silver or the Panzerkampfabzeichen in Silber was established on December 20th, 1939. The Panzer Assault Badge in Silver was dedicated to tank crews or tank units. Later there was also a Panzer Assault Badge in Bronze established for members of other units of tank divisions.

The prerequisite for awarding were at least three tank interventions or actions in three different days. There were around 22,000 Panzer Assault Badges in Silver awarded.

The Iron Cross 2nd Class / Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse was established on September 1st, 1939. It was awarded for an act of bravery against the enemy or acts which are above the military obligations. Over 3 million medals were awarded.
